Clergy are not merely employees of religious organizations, but spiritual leaders for whom faith is the foundation of life. Many of them have religious beliefs that prohibit handling weapons.
However, with the start of the full-scale invasion, many such individuals were mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine, often against their own convictions. The reason was that there was no legal mechanism in Ukraine to exempt religious workers from military service.
Today, the situation has changed. The state has recognized the importance of spiritual support and the humanitarian mission carried out by religious communities, providing the possibility to exempt conscripted clergy.
